Augmented Reality for Christmas

In 2020, the festive period will be like nothing we have ever had before. After all challenges 2020 brought us, the only thing one needs is to gather with loved ones, eat delicious meals, and have great conversations. However, we may not have the opportunity to do so.

Luckily there are not only limitations in 2020. We can also expect novelties due to advances in technology and transformed online trends.

It is no news that each holiday season brings on an army of thematic filters. To stand out, our AR Filter has to be original. This festive period is a time of opportunity for brands. By the spread of augmented reality, AR campaigns have become the star of the preparations. AR Filters can cheer one up, so this is the primary aspect worth focussing on.

In recent years, trendsetter brands have all came up with a couple of fun AR Filters. The imagery was mostly the same: reindeer antlers, Santa hats, fairy lights, etc. But if one desires to be seen and heard in this busy season, it is crucial to have a lasting idea in mind.

Starbucks, for example, made four eye-catching AR Filters in 2019 that were accessible by scanning their eco-friendly holiday cups. The AR Filters were not only used to create a festive vibe but to emphasize that purchasing eco-friendly, reusable cups can make a difference.

M and M’s approach was by a Santa Filter. The colourful M and M’s chocolate balls appeared as Christmas lights around the screen.

McDonald’s comes up with something cool and memorable every year. Two years ago, they posted an AR Filter that could be unlocked by scanning the holiday packaging. The dancing, animated reindeer that we could come across was a fun companion in our Snapchat Stories. The AR Filter referred to McDonald's television commercial, proving the point that combining ads on different platforms is always key to a successful campaign.

Footlocker has taken the opportunity to announce a new sneaker by making an AR experience. Curious shoe lovers could unpack the Gatorade AJ1 virtually before going to the stores to get them. During a global pandemic, virtual try-ons and unboxings can make people feel safe, offering an alternative to going into crowded stores.

Target created a practical AR Filter called "Will it fit?", that allowed customers to pick the perfect pine. The AR experience helped visualize the Christmas tree in their own space.

We prepared for the holidays with a mini-game in which the users had to avoid the snowballs flying towards their face. These fun, skill-testing games engage the viewer by their interactivity. The star of our AR Filter was Hide the Pain Harold, who was happy to beat the attack of snowballs. Or was he?

Social media connects people, even when they are not able to meet due to any circumstances. Since augmented reality became part of our everyday lives, several brands have come up with the idea of giving an AR Filter as a present to loved ones. It is a beautiful idea because an AR Filter is virtual yet tangible, personal, and rich in ideas. If you have a hard time coming up with a new gift this year, or you think last year’s present could not be outperformed, it is worth thinking about an AR Filter.
